8 Killed After Charter Plane Crashes Near Remote Alaska Radar Site
A civilian charter plane carrying eight people crashed while approaching a remote military radar site in western Alaska on Thursday, August 20. Everyone aboard—two pilots and six passengers—was killed.
The aircraft had departed Anchorage and was headed to the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport when it went down early Thursday afternoon, according to The Associated Press and Reuters. The radar facility sits roughly 450 miles west of Anchorage in one of Alaska’s most isolated regions.
Authorities have not announced what caused the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
What officials have confirmed
Alaskan Command described the plane as a civilian-contracted aircraft. Clint Johnson, chief of the NTSB’s Alaska region, told AP that two pilots and six passengers were aboard and that the plane was believed to have crashed during its approach to Cape Newenham.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed that it had chartered the flight. Two Corps employees were among those killed, according to a statement reported by Alaska’s News Source. The agency said relatives had been notified and that it was coordinating with local, state and federal authorities.
Officials had not publicly identified those aboard at the time of publication. Details about the other passengers’ roles and the work planned at the radar site also had not been released.
A mission to an isolated radar station
Cape Newenham is part of a network of remote sites used to monitor aircraft operating in Alaska’s airspace and near the state’s borders. The installation is managed by the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center.
Lt. Gen. Robert Davis, who commands Alaskan Command, the Alaskan NORAD Region and Eleventh Air Force, called the crash a devastating loss for both the military community and the communities it serves.
Davis described the people aboard as dedicated professionals carrying out important work in a demanding environment. He said supporting their families, friends and colleagues was the command’s immediate priority and thanked search-and-recovery personnel for their response.
The investigation is just beginning
The NTSB is responsible for determining the probable cause of civil aviation accidents. Investigators typically examine the aircraft’s maintenance history, flight data and communications, weather, crew experience and evidence recovered from the site.
None of those factors has been identified as a cause in this case. The plane’s remote destination and the limited information released overnight mean investigators may need time before offering even preliminary findings.
The investigation will need to establish the aircraft’s precise flight path, what happened during the approach and whether investigators can recover usable onboard records or other evidence. Any early theory circulating before those facts are collected should be treated cautiously.
Why the location matters
Much of Alaska depends on small aircraft and charter operators because vast communities, work sites and public facilities cannot be reached easily by road. Flights routinely connect Anchorage with isolated locations where weather, distance and limited infrastructure can complicate normal operations and emergency response.
That context explains why the Cape Newenham mission relied on a charter aircraft, but it does not explain why this flight crashed. Only the formal investigation can make that determination.
For now, the confirmed toll is eight lives: six passengers and two pilots. Federal officials say the focus remains on their families, the recovery effort and finding answers about what happened during the final approach.
