Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Starts at $1,999—and Opens to a 7.6-Inch Screen
Apple has finally folded the iPhone—and attached the highest starting price in the product’s history.
At its September 9 event in Cupertino, the company unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone. The device starts at $1,999, has a 5.4-inch outer screen and opens to a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple’s own store lists a fully loaded 2-terabyte version for $3,199.
That combination makes the Duo both Apple’s biggest phone display and its boldest test yet of whether a still-niche category can become mainstream. The reveal was confirmed by Apple’s launch page, with details independently reported by Reuters and The Associated Press.
A pocket phone that opens into a larger workspace
Closed, the Duo has a conventional outer display. Opened like a book, it becomes a horizontal 7.6-inch screen—80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro’s display, according to AP. Apple says the inner panel is the largest ever used in an iPhone.
The larger canvas is designed for more than watching video. Users can split the screen between two apps, place two windows from the same website side by side, and use an Apple Pencil. Apple also demonstrated wider layouts for video calls and workplace apps, an effort to position the foldable as a small productivity device rather than an expensive novelty.
The phone runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip and a new C2 cellular modem. The company lists a titanium frame and hinge cover, two 48-megapixel rear cameras, a 12-megapixel front camera and an under-display FaceTime camera. Its published battery estimates reach 44 hours of video playback on the outer display or 31 hours on the inner display.
The price climbs from $1,999 to $3,199
The base Duo includes 256 gigabytes of storage. Apple’s U.S. pricing page lists the 512GB model at $2,199, the 1TB model at $2,599 and the 2TB model at $3,199. The two colors are Night Sky and Star White.
At $1,999 before tax, even the entry model costs $800 more than the new iPhone 18 Pro and $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Those conventional flagship phones now begin at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively.
The Duo also arrives with compromises that separate it from Apple’s familiar premium formula. In the United States it relies on eSIM rather than a physical SIM card, and its published camera system has two rear lenses instead of the three-camera array on the 18 Pro models. Apple is betting that the folding screen, multitasking and compact form will matter more to early buyers.
Apple is late—but its arrival could expand the category
Samsung, Huawei, Motorola and Google have sold foldable phones for years. Apple’s entry comes after competitors established the basic design and worked through early problems involving hinges, screen creases and durability.
Foldables still represent less than 5% of global smartphone sales, according to an analyst cited by AP. That small share is precisely why the Duo matters: Apple can sell a meaningful number of premium devices without needing the category to replace ordinary smartphones immediately.
IDC expects Apple could secure roughly 40% of the foldable-phone niche by the end of 2027, Reuters reported. That is a forecast, not a guarantee, and the $1,999 starting price will sharply limit the audience. But an iPhone launch can pull developers, accessory makers and consumers toward a form factor that previously seemed experimental.
A defining debut for Apple’s new CEO
The event also carried unusual leadership stakes. John Ternus, who replaced Tim Cook as chief executive on September 1, led the presentation. The Duo is therefore the first major product reveal of his tenure and the most significant redesign of Apple’s flagship phone since the iPhone X in 2017, according to Reuters.
Apple can afford a carefully measured gamble. The iPhone generated $209.6 billion in the company’s most recent fiscal year—just over half of total sales. Yet that dependence also means a major design shift must expand the lineup without weakening the conventional models that still drive the business.
Investors offered a muted first verdict: Apple shares closed 0.3% lower on Wednesday. The more important test begins when people can handle the hinge, compare the inner screen with established foldables and decide whether a phone shaped roughly like a passport is worth laptop-level money.
When the iPhone Duo goes on sale
Apple says U.S. preorders open at 5 a.m. Pacific time on October 16, with availability beginning October 23. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup arrives earlier, on September 18.
For now, the biggest unanswered question is not whether Apple can build a foldable phone. It has. The question is whether the company can persuade enough customers that one large screen tucked inside a smaller device is worth at least $1,999.
