Brewers Win Their First World Series—A 57-Year Wait Ends in Game 5
The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time, ending a 57-season wait with a 4–1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5.
Milwaukee clinched the best-of-seven series four games to one Wednesday night at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The championship completed a dominant season in which the Brewers won a major-league-best 103 regular-season games and went 11–2 in the postseason.
The franchise began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Milwaukee the following year. Its only previous World Series appearance came in 1982, when the Brewers lost a seven-game series to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jacob Misiorowski shuts down Tampa Bay
Jacob Misiorowski delivered the performance Milwaukee needed in the clincher. The young right-hander held the Rays scoreless for 5⅔ innings, allowing only two hits before leaving with a right calf cramp.
Milwaukee’s bullpen preserved the lead, with Trevor Megill recording the final out. Tampa Bay’s only run came in the ninth inning.
Misiorowski’s start continued a remarkable postseason run for Milwaukee’s pitching staff. According to MLB’s statistical review, Brewers pitchers never allowed more than four runs in any of their 13 playoff games, while the bullpen posted a 1.38 postseason ERA.
Cooper Pratt delivers in the biggest game
Rookie Cooper Pratt drove in two of Milwaukee’s four runs. His second-inning single opened the scoring, and his sacrifice fly in the sixth helped extend the lead to 4–0.
Pratt also set a rookie World Series record by collecting hits in six consecutive at-bats. He finished the Series with seven RBIs, tying the record for a rookie, according to MLB.
David Hamilton added an RBI single in the fifth, and William Contreras doubled home another run in the sixth. Milwaukee relied on the same disciplined, pressure-based offense that carried it throughout October rather than waiting for home runs.
William Contreras earns World Series MVP
Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player after batting .381 with four RBIs across five games. The catcher also controlled Tampa Bay’s running game, throwing out four attempted base stealers.
The 2026 World Series was the first to use Major League Baseball’s Automated Ball-Strike challenge system. Contreras won 10 of his 13 challenges, repeatedly turning borderline calls in Milwaukee’s favor, according to The Associated Press.
He became the eighth catcher to win World Series MVP and the first Brewers player ever to receive the award.
A championship built through the entire roster
Milwaukee’s title did not come from a single superstar carrying the team. Jackson Chourio collected 11 hits in the five-game Series, the most ever through five World Series games by a player his age. Pratt supplied timely hits, Misiorowski dominated the clincher, Contreras contributed on both sides of the ball and the bullpen repeatedly protected close leads.
The Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres in the Division Series and swept the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. Their only two postseason losses came against Tampa Bay.
For the Rays, the defeat extends their own wait. Tampa Bay has now reached the World Series three times without winning a championship.
Milwaukee finally has its moment
The title is the Brewers’ first, but it is Milwaukee’s second Major League Baseball championship. The Milwaukee Braves won the 1957 World Series before moving to Atlanta after the 1965 season.
This Brewers team now has its own place in the city’s history. It finished with baseball’s best regular-season record, eliminated the defending champions and closed the World Series on the road behind young players who could shape the franchise for years.
After 57 seasons, the final line is no longer complicated: the Milwaukee Brewers are champions.
