California Halloween Store Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 6 Wounded
A Friday-night shooting inside a Halloween costume store at a Northern California mall left one person dead and six others wounded, turning one of the year’s busiest family-shopping nights into an active homicide investigation.
Fairfield police responded to the Solano Town Center at about 8:30 p.m. on October 30 after gunfire erupted inside a Spirit Halloween store. Seven people were found with gunshot wounds. One died, while six were taken to hospitals; at least three were in critical condition, according to The Associated Press and ABC News.
Police say the attack appeared targeted
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and involved one assailant, AP reported, but police had not released a suspect description, motive or arrest announcement at the latest update. The identities and ages of the victims were also being withheld.
Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said detectives were interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence from the mall. He expressed hope that surveillance cameras would help investigators reconstruct what happened and identify the shooter.
The FBI’s Sacramento office sent an evidence-response team to assist local authorities. Multiple agencies searched the shopping center and helped manage traffic while officers secured the scene, according to AP.
Witnesses describe panic inside the mall
Shoppers and employees told local and regional news organizations they heard a rapid series of loud shots and saw people running from the store. Some escaped through emergency exits, while workers in nearby businesses sheltered or fled as police arrived.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the shooting triggered a large law-enforcement response as families were making last-minute Halloween purchases. One witness described seeing a crowd—including families—running and screaming through the parking area.
Authorities have not said whether the person who died was pronounced dead at the store or later at a hospital. Reports have differed on that detail, so the confirmed fact is that one of the seven shooting victims died and six others were hospitalized.
Halloween events canceled as the investigation continues
Solano Town Center reopened Saturday, but the mall canceled a scheduled trick-or-treating event. Police urged residents to remain vigilant and asked anyone with information, photographs or video to contact the Fairfield Police Department.
Fairfield is roughly 40 miles southwest of Sacramento and sits between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. The timing of the attack—inside a seasonal store on Halloween eve—heightened concern because the mall had been drawing families and holiday shoppers.
Police emphasized that the investigation remained active. Until officials release additional evidence, critical questions remain unanswered: why the store was targeted, whether the shooter knew any of the victims, and where the suspect went after the gunfire.
The most urgent concern is the condition of the six survivors. At least three remained critically injured in the initial police briefing, and authorities had not announced updated conditions by Saturday morning.
