Nikita Kucherov Reportedly Wants Out—Lightning Say They Won’t Trade Him
The NHL’s reigning most valuable player reportedly wants out of Tampa Bay. The Lightning’s answer, delivered within hours, could not have been clearer: they are not trading him.
Nikita Kucherov has informed the Lightning that he will not re-sign and has asked to be traded, according to The Associated Press and Sportsnet. General manager Julien BriseBois responded with a public statement saying the club “unequivocally” has no intention of moving its franchise scoring leader.
A trade request meets an immediate refusal
The reported request arrived at a dramatic moment. Kucherov, 33, is in the final season of the eight-year, $76 million contract he signed in 2018. He can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if the sides do not agree to an extension.
Sportsnet first reported that Kucherov told both the organization and his teammates he would not be returning after this season and wanted a trade. AP independently confirmed the request through a person familiar with the private discussions.
The Lightning then shifted the story from a private contract dispute to a public standoff. “We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita,” BriseBois said in the team statement, which was also published by NHL.com.
Why Kucherov’s future could reshape the league
Kucherov is not simply Tampa Bay’s best current player. He recently passed Steven Stamkos to become the franchise’s career points leader and has accumulated 1,139 points in 891 regular-season games, according to Reuters.
He has won the Hart Trophy twice, captured three Art Ross scoring titles and helped lead the Lightning to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021. Few available players could alter the balance of a playoff race as dramatically.
But a transaction is not solely Kucherov’s decision. His contract includes a modified no-trade clause under which he can identify 10 acceptable destinations, Reuters reported. Tampa Bay controls whether to negotiate at all, and BriseBois’s statement indicates the club intends to keep him while it remains a contender.
The unresolved questions
The exact cause of the break has not been publicly established. Contract negotiations are the obvious backdrop, but neither Kucherov nor his agent, Dan Milstein, has offered a detailed on-record explanation. Reports about desired salary or preferred destinations should therefore be treated as developing information rather than settled fact.
Kucherov is expected to continue playing while the situation unfolds. That means every game, lineup decision and interaction with teammates will now be viewed through the possibility that one of the era’s defining offensive players could be nearing the end of his time in Tampa Bay.
The timing adds another layer. The Lightning play in Nashville on Saturday against Stamkos, the former Tampa Bay captain whose franchise scoring record Kucherov just broke. What was already an emotional reunion now arrives with a question hanging over the organization: could a second defining star also leave?
For now, two positions stand in direct conflict. Kucherov reportedly wants a new path. The Lightning say they will not provide one. Unless one side changes course, the standoff could follow Tampa Bay all the way to the trade deadline—and potentially into free agency.
