Danny Masterson, Star of “That ’70s Show,” Sentenced to 30 Years to Life for Rape Convictions

LOS ANGELES — Danny Masterson, widely recognized for his portrayal of Steven Hyde on the popular sitcom “That ’70s Show,” received a 30 years to life prison sentence today, Sept. 7, for forcibly raping two women. This ruling came after the actor was found guilty in a retrial earlier this year.

The courtroom was filled with tension as the two victims, whom Masterson was convicted of raping, bravely addressed the Los Angeles Superior Court. Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo, after hearing the testimonies, handed down the substantial sentence to the 47-year-old.

Prominent figures were present during the sentencing, including Masterson’s brother, Chris Masterson of “Malcolm in the Middle” fame, and actress Leah Remini. Remini, once a member of the Church of Scientology like Masterson, has since become a vocal activist against the church.

Masterson’s legal woes began in June 2020 when he was taken into custody and charged with the rapes of three women. These separate incidents reportedly occurred between 2001 and 2003. Despite these serious charges, Masterson consistently maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty and denying all allegations brought against him. After his arrest, he secured his release by posting a bond on his hefty $3.3 million bail.

Today’s sentencing marks a significant chapter in a prolonged legal battle and sends a strong message about the consequences of sexual violence.
