While Baltimore was enveloped in the quiet of night, a cargo ship, adrift and powerless, crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge with such force that it collapsed within moments. The timing of the catastrophe, occurring in the early hours, was a fortunate turn of events. Had it occurred during the day, the bridge, a vital artery over a channel leading to one of the East Coast’s busiest ports, might have been bustling with hundreds of vehicles. Thankfully, early warnings allowed police to prevent cars and trucks from accessing the bridge at the time of the accident. However, the incident claimed the lives of six individuals who couldn’t be saved. These victims were maintenance workers, individuals whose presence often goes unnoticed yet who perform critical, demanding work during the night to maintain the nation’s infrastructure.
