A deadly shooting at a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, has left four people dead—including the suspected gunman—and seven others injured. The attack unfolded Saturday afternoon, August 1, turning a busy restaurant and shopping area into a chaotic crime scene as customers and employees ran for safety.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 24-year-old Chad Williams. Authorities said Williams acted alone and later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Three other people were killed during the attack, while seven victims suffered injuries. Two of the injured remained in critical condition as authorities continued their investigation.
The gunfire reportedly began shortly before 2:30 p.m. at the restaurant, which had opened only days earlier. Witnesses described people desperately trying to escape while employees and bystanders attempted to help those who had been wounded. Police officers arriving at the scene encountered what Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks described as an extremely chaotic situation.
An off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and an armed civilian reportedly fired at the attacker during the shooting. Investigators believe their actions distracted the gunman and may have prevented additional deaths or injuries. The suspect eventually retreated from the restaurant area before taking his own life, according to police.
One of the people killed was an In-N-Out employee. Company president Lynsi Snyder released a statement expressing grief over the employee’s death and offering condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy. The identities of all the victims had not been publicly released as officials worked to notify their families.
Authorities have not announced a motive for the shooting. Police said the suspect’s family is cooperating with investigators, while the FBI has requested that witnesses submit photographs or video recordings that could help establish a complete timeline of the attack.
