Three Children and Teacher Killed at Oregon Elementary School; Bystander Stops Teen Shooter
Three children and a teacher were killed Thursday when a 16-year-old attacker forced his way into an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, authorities said. A community member who saw the teenager enter the building followed him inside and fatally shot him, bringing the attack to an end.
The children who died were 5, 8 and 11 years old, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said at an evening news conference. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to a hospital. Officials had not publicly released the victims’ names as of early Friday.
What happened at Silver Rail Elementary
The first 911 call came shortly before 1 p.m. local time from a person in a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary School who reported being shot at by someone carrying a long gun, according to The Associated Press.
More emergency calls followed from inside the school. Police said the attacker fired through locked doors to enter the building and began shooting. Bend officers reached the scene within minutes, and the suspected shooter was found dead inside.
An initial Bend Police update listed the incident time as 12:59 p.m. and said officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. The department said an officer reported seconds later that the suspect had been shot, possibly by a bystander. Officials provided the fuller account at the evening briefing.
The rapid emergency response included Bend Police, Bend Fire & Rescue, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies. Authorities closed the area around the school and told the public to stay away so emergency crews could reach the campus. Students who were not injured were moved through a reunification process away from the scene.
A community member intervened
Authorities said the community member saw the armed teenager enter the school, pursued him and confronted him inside. Police did not immediately release the person’s name or fully describe the encounter. The investigation will need to determine the exact sequence of shots and examine all evidence from the scene.
Reuters independently reported the account from the police briefing, including the ages of those killed and injured. Authorities have not announced a motive, explained how the teen obtained the weapon or disclosed whether he had a known connection to the school.
The school and community respond
Silver Rail Elementary serves roughly 450 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Families were directed to a nearby church for reunification while law enforcement secured the campus and investigators began processing the scene.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook called the attack an “unthinkable tragedy.” The district’s immediate work includes supporting students, families and staff while coordinating with law enforcement.
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek joined local officials at the evening briefing and thanked school employees, first responders and the person who intervened. In an official statement, she said the state’s emergency-management agency was coordinating support across multiple agencies.
Kotek ordered flags at Oregon public institutions lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset Friday in remembrance of the victims and survivors. Community members also gathered for a candlelight vigil in Bend as the city began mourning.
What remains unanswered
Investigators have not identified the teenage shooter publicly. Because the suspect was a minor and the inquiry is active, early online claims about his background, motive or affiliations should not be treated as fact unless authorities confirm them.
Police are expected to examine surveillance footage, 911 recordings, the firearm, communications and witness accounts. They will also review how the attacker got through the locked entrance and how the community member who confronted him came to be at the scene.
Officials also have not provided a detailed medical update beyond describing the two hospitalized victims as critically injured at the evening briefing. Their conditions, the timing of any school reopening and the district’s longer-term support plans may become clearer as families are notified and investigators complete their initial work.
The established facts are devastating but limited: four victims were killed, two others were critically injured, the alleged attacker died at the school, and authorities credit a community member with stopping him. The names and stories of the victims belong first to their families, who are now facing an unimaginable loss.
Officials urge care with developing information
The City of Bend directed residents to official police channels for updates. As the investigation continues, verified information may change or expand. Readers should be cautious with graphic material, unconfirmed names and social-media posts that claim to identify the shooter or victims.
