TCS Plans a $7.4 Billion, 1-Gigawatt AI Campus on 264 Acres in Hyderabad
Hyderabad is being lined up for an artificial-intelligence project measured not just in servers, but in power-plant scale.
HyperVault, a subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services, says it has secured 264 acres for an AI data-center campus that could reach one gigawatt of capacity. HyperVault and its partners expect to invest up to 700 billion rupees—about $7.41 billion at the exchange rate used by Reuters—to build and operate the site.
If fully developed, TCS says the campus would rank among India’s largest and most advanced AI infrastructure facilities. The announcement places one of the country’s biggest technology companies directly into the global race to supply the computing power behind increasingly demanding AI models.
What TCS has announced
The official TCS announcement, dated September 5, says HyperVault has secured the Hyderabad site and will develop it in phases according to customer demand and technology requirements.
The plan calls for capacity of up to one gigawatt, or 1,000 megawatts. That is the project’s full-buildout target—not capacity that exists today. The $7.4 billion figure is also an investment ceiling involving HyperVault and unnamed partners, rather than a single immediate expenditure.
The campus is intended for frontier AI companies, hyperscale cloud providers and global enterprises. TCS says it will support dense deployments of graphics-processing units used to train AI models, run inference and handle advanced computing workloads.
Reuters independently reported the investment, acreage and planned capacity. The Financial Express also confirmed the phased development and the focus on high-density AI computing.
Why one gigawatt gets attention
Modern AI systems require enormous clusters of specialized chips operating around the clock. Those chips generate intense heat and need substantial electrical, cooling and network infrastructure around them.
HyperVault says its facilities will use high rack density, direct-to-chip liquid cooling and larger power blocks. Deepesh Kiran Nanda, HyperVault’s chief executive, said the company is building for “higher density, liquid cooling, larger power blocks and faster deployment.”
That helps explain the scale of the Hyderabad proposal. A one-gigawatt campus is not simply a large office complex filled with computers. It requires extensive substations, transmission connections, backup systems, cooling equipment and high-capacity fiber networks. The surrounding infrastructure can be as consequential as the server halls themselves.
The project is also a strategic bet on India
TCS says Hyderabad offers the land, technical workforce and business ecosystem needed to serve global customers. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called the project historic and argued that locally hosted computing power is becoming a form of public infrastructure.
The company expects the development to support several thousand direct and indirect jobs across construction, engineering, power, networking, cooling and operations. Those projections cover the wider project and supply chain; TCS did not release a detailed permanent-employment estimate.
For TCS, HyperVault also expands the company beyond its traditional technology-services business. The goal is to connect physical AI infrastructure with TCS’s cloud, engineering, enterprise-transformation and AI services.
Power, water and timing remain major questions
The announcement is ambitious, but important details are still missing.
TCS did not identify the project’s customers, name the outside investment partners, disclose the expected size or opening date of the first phase, or provide a timetable for reaching the full one-gigawatt target. The ultimate buildout will depend on demand.
The company also says the campus will use green energy and “water-neutral design principles.” That commitment matters because high-density data centers can place pressure on local electricity and water systems. However, the announcement does not define the energy mix, disclose expected water consumption or explain how water neutrality will be measured.
The Next Web noted that those sustainability terms have not yet been accompanied by detailed public metrics. The real environmental picture will become clearer as permits, engineering plans and individual construction phases emerge.
A huge plan—with the first milestones still ahead
The numbers make the Hyderabad campus one of the day’s most consequential technology announcements: 264 acres, up to $7.4 billion and a potential one gigawatt of AI capacity.
But the most important words are still “up to” and “phased.” HyperVault has secured the land and announced the destination. Customers, utilities, financing and construction milestones will determine how quickly—and how completely—the enormous plan becomes reality.
