SEATTLE — What was meant to be the vibrant final evening of the annual “Bite of Seattle” festival turned into a scene of panic and tragedy on Sunday, July 26, when gunfire erupted in the heart of Seattle Center. The shooting, which occurred near the iconic Space Needle around 6:00 p.m. PDT, left three people dead and four others wounded, including a two-year-old child.
Chaos at the Seattle Center
Thousands of visitors were attending the popular three-day food festival when an exchange of gunfire broke out between two individuals near the Armory on the Seattle Center grounds.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple quick pops that many initially mistook for fireworks before crowds began surging in panic. Livestream footage captured from food vendors recorded attendees shouting “Get down!” as families jumped over barricades and fled toward nearby exits and the Space Needle lobby for shelter.
“At first, I thought there were fireworks, and then everybody flooded and ran past us,” said festivalgoer Nick Bate. “People were hiding, pushing… baby strollers were falling.”
Victims and Casualties
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) and Seattle Fire Department confirmed seven total bystanders were struck by gunfire during the exchange:
- Fatalities: Two victims—a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man—were pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency CPR attempts. A third victim, a 56-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
- Injured: Four surviving victims were treated for gunshot wounds, including a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old woman. Hospital officials reported that the surviving patients are in stable condition.
Law Enforcement Response & Investigation
Officers assigned to the festival security detail responded within seconds of hearing the initial shots. According to Seattle Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Davis, officers confronted one of the armed individuals at the scene, preventing further casualties and recovering two firearms.
- Suspect in Custody: A 15-year-old male was taken into custody at the scene. During a Monday press conference, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson clarified that the teenager was booked on firearm and assault investigation charges while homicide detectives review forensic evidence.
- Outstanding Shooter: Police confirmed that a second individual involved in the exchange fled the scene. A search of the Seattle Center complex did not locate the suspect, and detectives from the Homicide Unit, alongside federal partners from the FBI and ATF, are actively working to identify and apprehend the remaining shooter.
