Meeko Model Spotlight: Winnie Harlow Turned Instagram Discovery Into a Global Fashion Career
Winnie Harlow has built a fashion career around a look that once made her stand out for reasons beyond her control. Born Chantelle Whitney Brown-Young on July 27, 1994, in the Greater Toronto Area, the Canadian model has gone from being discovered through social media to major runways, television and entrepreneurship.
Harlow is 32 years old and has been open publicly about living with vitiligo, a chronic condition that causes areas of skin to lose pigment. According to her public biography, she was diagnosed at age four. Her visibility in fashion has helped make her one of the best-known models with the condition.
From Instagram to America’s Next Top Model
Social media played an important role in Harlow’s rise. Public profiles of her career report that Tyra Banks discovered her on Instagram before Harlow became a contestant on Cycle 21 of America’s Next Top Model in 2014. That television exposure introduced her to a much larger audience and helped turn an online presence into an international modeling career.
Her career expanded well beyond reality television. Harlow worked with fashion brands and publications, and in 2018 she became the first model with vitiligo to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She was also recognized as one of the BBC’s 100 Women and later appeared as a judge on Amazon Prime Video’s Making the Cut.
Building a Brand Beyond Modeling
Harlow’s career also moved into business. She founded the skincare brand Cay Skin in 2022, extending her name beyond runway and editorial modeling. Her public Instagram account, @winnieharlow, remains a central part of her public-facing brand, where followers can see fashion, beauty and lifestyle content directly from the creator.
What makes Harlow especially relevant to the modern creator economy is the path itself: social media visibility helped open a traditional fashion-industry door, while the audience built around her career later supported opportunities in television, beauty and entrepreneurship.
A Distinctive Fashion Story
Harlow’s success also reflects a broader change in fashion, where distinctive personal identity and direct audience relationships can matter alongside conventional agency representation. Her career has made her a recognizable figure in conversations about beauty standards and representation without limiting her work to that subject alone.
